Not really a CHARMM problem; you may need some help from a local Linux expert to fix your system setup.

Check what happens with the Linux 'hostname' command; it should return the machine's network name.

There appears to be a problem with the IP address of the first nameserver listed-- the address should be 4 numbers (not 3), and none of the the numbers should be larger than 254 (382 is wrong).

Also, the /etc/hosts file appears to be empty; it should contain at least

127.0.0.1 localhost loopback

Here are 2 patches that fix this problem, one for c33 and one for c36 as there have been some changes in that area lately. It's a matter of not checking the return value of a function...

Hi,

I have the same problem with c35b2 on my Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop (v. 5 for 64-bit x86_64):

./charmm
gethostbyname>hostname problem: check /etc/hosts or /etc/resolv.conf
Segmentation fault

vi /etc/hosts:

# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6

vi /etc/resolv.conf:

; generated by /sbin/dhclient-script
search jouy.inra.fr
nameserver 138.102.119.226
nameserver 138.102.1.130
nameserver 138.102.119.44

Any suggestion will be appreciated.

Thank you,

Bogdan Tarus

If you're inexperienced with modifying code, I would recommend against the patch. Fixing /etc/hosts seems to be the easier solution (while waiting for the CHARMM developers to do something about this trivial problem).

Yes, add an alias to the real host name in /etc/hosts you can--

127.0.0.1 localhost real-host-name
